The Night Before...
Game 2 tomorrow evening in Dorchester at the Perkins Community Center against Codman Academy. Codman, not dissimilar to CCSC, was started five years ago and just recently experienced the thrill of graduating an initial class. Codman also, according to founding faculty member and close friend, put in its time getting beaten up in the hoops league as it developed some talent and struggled to find gym space and keep kids academically eligible. Codman is currently sitting in first place in the league, tied, and has "put in its time." We're unlikely to be shown sympathy from them and the rumor has it that they're large. Needless to say, they'll also be hungry and athletic.
We head in hoping merely to build on the success that was last Friday (despite the final score). We had a decent practice Monday and then spent a considerable time scrimmaging on Wednesday (thanks to some outsiders, one from HLS and one from HGSD, both of whom I play regular pick-up with).
These kids are good. These kids have a lot of potential. These kids are passionate and, for the most part, have bought into our system, have bought into the fact that a slow, smart (perhaps white) team that plays intelligently and in an organized fashion will hand athletic, but disorganized and unthinking players a loss every time. Interestingly, this issue is one that almost every team in our league faces. It will be interesting to see if Codman relies on size and strength and a playground style of hoops, or if someone has drilled them, taught them the basics and they run sets against us.
Regardless, we will be successful if we play as we can, if kids remain within themselves and trust each other. We will be successful if we're not intimidated and can hang during an initial Codman stretched. We will be successful if we listen and improve. We will be successful as long as we don't have our spirit or confidence crushed.
I'm nervous. And I can't wait for tomorrow night.
